Training as part of working hours

Training as part of working hours may sound like a luxury.

But I do it now myself, and I can clearly feel the difference.

Earlier on, I was actually not very good at using the opportunities we gave our employees. In some periods, I even worked more in order to offer benefits that I did not use myself.

That has changed.

Today, I see it as part of my responsibility, both to my family and to the company, to make sure I can perform well over the long term. That is why I often start my workday with training at 8:00 AM. And yes, that time is part of my working hours.

That means I am at the office no earlier than 9:00 AM. In return, it makes a big difference that training happens after school and kindergarten drop-off, instead of being pushed into the busiest part of the afternoon or late in the evening.

I show up with more energy, a clearer head, and more capacity. That is noticeable, both in the team and in the way I work with customers.

At Webnorth, we have paid for training for many years and allowed employees to place it within working hours when it makes sense for them. Not because everyone should do the same thing, but because we believe people do better work when there is room for what helps everyday life function. That also matters in a day-to-day setup with responsibility for both WordPress service and hosting and maintenance and optimization.

For me, training has become an important part of that.

For others, it may be something else. And that is completely fine. The point is not that everyone should choose the same solution. The point is that there should be room for what helps people sustain working life over time while also feeling seen and valued.
